The Eternal Beauty of Jade - A Chinese Treasure

By Richard Hughes from Lotus Gemology, this lecture at the Hong Kong's Jewellery Gem WORLD Expo on September 16th, explores the profound historical roots and enchanting resurgence in Chinese jade sculpturing since the late 20th century.

Jade: An Elusive Chinese Treasure

Jade has been a cherished artifact of China for nearly ten millennia. The Chinese term Yu 玉 embodies not just stone but also holds deep cultural significance; its pictographic representation distinguishes it from other characters like ruler by merely having one less dot. Often, people associate Jade with the striking green mineral known as fei cui sourced from Burma – a vibrant jewel of choice for collectors outside China. Contrarily, within China's rich tapestry of history, Jade embodies a distinct charm, symbolizing the 'Heavenly Stone' with its finest qualities being white.

Richard Hughes has been an ardent student of Jade since his first expedition to Burma at 19 years old and provide an overview that unravels the mysteries of the origin of both fei cui and nephrite, followed by a profound dive into the true essence of Chinese Jade - Yu.
